to the untrained ear a collaboration between mosaic boss steve o sullivan and minimal house maestro ricardo villalobos may not seem like the most obvious sound clash. however, dig a little deeper and you ll find that both these artists have a long history and shared love of stripped back aesthetics and dubbed out rhythms carving out respective sounds that have never strayed far from their roots. sullric is the result of a daylong session at the end of 2016 where the pair plugged in, switched on and set everything to cycle: recording several hours worth of material to tape with an edit of their favourite passage worked into two versions in post-production.

brian tennessee claflin, aka prix, was a radical and fiery figure who worked on the intersecting fringes of berlins art and nightlife scenes since he moved there in 2006 up until his tragic death in 2014 at the age of 33. he ran the notorious sunday soirée pork at ficken3000, and left behind a small but very powerful body of art, developing a cult following of friends, family, and fans in a brief but intense period of frenetic activity. between 2009 and 2013, brian and his friend, the american cum berlin musician and producer snax, produced music and sound collages. all these productions met somewhere at the intersection of dance, voodoo, bitchiness and punk and several were used for brians performance pieces. the brian tennessee claflin foundation and snaxs random records are very proud to finally release two tracks from these sessions, as well as remixes, digital and as vinyl ep, in a limited edition of 500 hand-numbered copies.

onboard having come up with an annual-ish drop of 12inches since 2010, even brenden aka chmmr set aside the spring of 2016 to challenge himself to a new format: a full-length album. a true nostalgic, he uses compass point-era and early italo sounds for inspiration and attempts to simulate these styles. this makes for a melodic, chuggy and graphic album that belongs a little more in the living room than on the dance floor. with 10 tracks of dusty rhythms and the honest, naive and spacious themes that is brendens signature, its a record designed to signal that todays technological future may not be as different as yesterdays. features a nice-looking cover painting drawn by the late harold cohens aaron program - automation at its finest. hidden behind his chmmr moniker is even brenden, whose summery debut found its way into the world via norwegian psych-disco label luna flicks in 2010. the record became somewhat of a soughtafter item and after making pit stops at relish, dødpop and untz untz records, he landed on prins thomas full pupp in 2014 and have stayed put ever since, all the while enjoying a steady habit of record jocking and the occasional keyboard duty in telephones now-defunct live band. even resides in oslo makes odd waves without vowels.

it’s hard to imagine being at the cutting edge of electronic dance music for over three decades, and never resorting to cliché or tired gimmicks in order to create unique and forward thinking music, but matthew herbert is still channelling original and thought provoking ideas into his projects all these years later. via his accidental record label, he has always excelled at left of centre productions, and through a variety of genre aliases (including doctor rockit, wishmountain and the matthew herbert big band), his imagination has always run wild, resulting in an infectious catalogue of music over the years. “brand new love-, featuring the vocals of rising star, zilla, finds herbert creating a dense and dramatic bass heavy cut. a steppers beat, utilizing herbert’s trademark sampling techniques, it’s a killer cut with sweeping cinematic qualities that sounds head and shoulders ahead of the rest. special request, the jungle heavy arm of paul woolford’s many recording talents, is enlisted to put his breakbeat spin on the original, and turns in an absolutely lethal version, choppy breaks, spinbacks and booming subs come with intent, whilst a sumptuous string arrangement accompanies zilla’s vocal for a truly uplifting spirit. “the peacock-, with its loose beats and opaque stabs, rolls along with its industrial undertones and ravey motif, discordant at times but a truly hypnotizing but in the finest of side b1 traditions. bringing up the rear, “cheekbone” is frenetic and charging micro tribal rave (a new genre classification right there), a glorious medley of percussion, earworm synths and guillotined vocal samples, showing just why matthew herbert is as vital an artist now as he has ever been.

history freely dilates and collapses on valgeir sigurðsson’s dissonance, his first solo release since 2012. its three large-scale works are haunted by the old western tradition, infused with the ethereal workings of electronics and sound manipulation.
dissonance treads elegantly along a fine line between traditional symphonic organicism and the fissures of the faltering structures of reality. it takes forward sigurðsson’s typically expansive, panoramic writing, and elevates it to a perpetual construction and deconstruction of time and space.
these are hardly his first experiments with the archaic technology of classical instruments, but here the distance between past and present is precisely what the music itself is designed to explore, and to distort.

‘in time’ is the new album from renegade roots and reggae producer wrongtom and hackney’s veteran breakbeat/jungle mc’s the ragga twins. ‘in time’ strips back the jungle, d&b, garage sound that the ragga twins are recognised for pioneering today, to take you back to the ‘80s reggae and dancehall landscape where they started out. throughout the record, the ragga twins recall and explore a 30-year-long journey, where they uncover prescient lyrics and stories of their youth. wrongtom provides the beats and riddims as a perfect setting for this celebration of the dancehall and reggae scene.
the vinyl release comes as a 12” + 7” package, all housed in full colour sleeve. album download card also includes upfront ‘in dub’ version of the album, these dub versions will only be available on the vinyl download card for the moment, until officially being released later in the year.

paris-born, nyc based dj/producer j hart and tokyo producer budamunk, teamed up for a very limited edition 45’s (only 250 units pressed) featuring masta ace, chris rivers, hdbeendope and rim. this numbered blue collector vinyl includes 2 exclusive songs: ‘trinity’ produced by dj j hart featuring chris rivers, hdbeendope, rim and ‘cool’ produced by budamunk feat. masta ace and dj j hart. these 2 tracks were featured on j and budamunk’s double dragon cassette tape, which was released exclusively in japan by jazzy sport music label earlier this year. the 2 sides cover artwork was crafted by painting artist, alexander grahovsky.

perm is one of leipzig s most busy producers and performers of electronic music. after releases on shtum, mana all nite, dur, kann and nachtdigital in recent years, holger is more than happy to welcome him with a four-tracker that o ers a deep insight into his vision of timeless techno: airy and yet rmly grounded, with a foggy atmosphere that permeates a vast space of sound. it is trippy and hypnotic but also very bodily and highly energetic. with these qualities it ts very nicely with holger 11 (polo) and 12 (barnt) a perfect closer for this mini triplet series, a concept that has become sort of a trademark for the label.

the seventh instalment in the rhythm nation series is by the uk producer isaac reuben. these jams are rough, raw and ready. they bear the bright-eyed and bushy-tailed signature of someone untarnished by exposure yet betray a complete vision and total control of the craft.
